On the 1700th Anniversary of the Council of Nicaea
- Reaffirm, on the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, the enduring catholic doctrine set forth in the Nicene Creed, and commits to work without ceasing toward the Nicene vision of the visible unity of the “one holy catholic and apostolic church” in Canada and throughout the world, especially by encouraging renewed ecumenical dialogue to restore a common computation of the date of Easter as mandated by that Council; and
- Request the Primate and the Director of Faith, Worship, and Ministry to ensure robust and active participation of Anglican Church of Canada representatives at the World Council of Churches’ Sixth World Conference on Faith and Order on the theme of “visible unity,” and at other events commemorating the Council’s 1700th anniversary.
The year 2025 marks the 1700th anniversary of the church’s first ecumenical council, convened at Nicaea (now İznik, Türkiye) in A.D. 325. At Nicaea, the early and still-undivided Church produced the original version of the Nicene Creed, affirming the consubstantial divinity of the Son and significantly shaping the foundational doctrine of the Holy Trinity. As the Nicene Creed remains the most universally received statement of Christian faith, this anniversary offers an exceptional opportunity for renewed thanksgiving, education, and shared witness among Christians worldwide.
This resolution invites General Synod to celebrate the enduring legacy of the Council of Nicaea by reaffirming the Anglican Church of Canada’s commitment to the foundational doctrinal principles articulated in the Nicene Creed and upheld in the Solemn Declaration of 1893, adopted during the first session of General Synod, which committed this Church to uphold “the faith defined in the Creeds as maintained by the undivided primitive Church.”
Finally, this resolution requests the Primate and the Director of Faith, Worship and Ministry to ensure strong and active participation by representatives of the Anglican Church of Canada at the World Council of Churches’ Sixth World Conference on Faith and Order. This significant ecumenical gathering, taking place from 24–28 October 2025 at Wādī al-Naṭrūn, Egypt, under the theme “Where Now for Visible Unity?”, provides a timely forum to advance our shared commitment toward visible unity across ecclesial traditions.
In the normal course, an ordinary motion must be passed by a majority of the members of General Synod present and voting together.
Six members of General Synod may, prior to the question being put, require a vote by Orders, with a majority of each Order being necessary to pass.
If a question passes on a Vote by Orders, any six members (two from each of three different dioceses) may immediately before the next item of business require a vote to be taken by dioceses. A motion passes if a majority (or a tie) of dioceses vote in favour.
